British illustrator Matt Ferguson has lived abroad in Japan and South Korea, during which he became fascinated with Korean history. He designed this watch which features King Sejong, a historical figure responsible for creating the Korean alphabet Hangul and for unifying his country and people and ushering in a new age in Korean history. Matt depicts the king with tears running down his face. He imagines if the King were alive today, he would feel proud of Korea's economic growth on one hand, but also saddened to see how the modern age has encroached upon the country's traditions, values, and land. There must be a balance between modernity and tradition, between the development for the future and the conservation of the past. Strike the balance, bridge the divide, celebrate the reconciliation.
Matt Ferguson is a British illustrator and designer currently living abroad. He graduated from Kingston Universities’ Illustration BA in 2009 and won the Brill Award for architectural drawing in the same year.
